The moment when you knew you wanted to be a musician:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tomorrow morning \u2013 as I sit down [or stand] to practice.<\/p>\n

An important skill for a career in music that does not have anything to do with an instrument or making music:<\/strong><\/p>\n

The sense, or rather the \u2018conceit\u2019, that there are things that \u2018need\u2019 doing, that the world needs to hear, that you\u2019ve been waiting for and are getting tired of not encountering. So, you do it yourself. It helps if it seems risky \u2013 as in not what you\u2019re \u2018supposed\u2019 to be doing.<\/p>\n

Two ways you stay motivated:<\/strong><\/p>\n

First is an awareness that the \u2018glow\u2019 we seek in music is, while elusive, always closer by a single step. Blend is an example \u2013 minute adjustments in voicing of parts or layers reliably pay huge dividends in \u2018matteringness\u2019. It\u2019s like free money, every time. Second is the conceit mentioned above \u2013 the need to do the undone.<\/p>\n

My \u2018sell-out\u2019 holiday album, The 12-Tones of Christmas, currently being engraved, and soon to be recorded.<\/p>\n

How do you discover new music?<\/strong><\/p>\n

By thinking, composing, and performing.<\/p>\n

One living and one dead musician that deserves more attention:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dead: Juan Vasquez [16th-century] Songs derived from his madrigals, as intabulated for vihuela by Miguel de Fuenllana.<\/p>\n

Living: Peter Yates. I don\u2019t need more attention, though my stuff rewards attention. I know this mainly from collaborating on it with other musicians. Also, in the days of cars with CD players, I\u2019d give discs to musicians to play on their drives from LA to San Francisco. With [again, in those days] not much else to do, they\u2019d get the message. A third example is a guy who had a crush on my singer, so he followed my stuff closely, got hooked.<\/p>\n
